Description: Trinidad & Tobago Coastline 2016Digitization Procedures Rocky coastlines: Areas with rocky coastlines tend to not have a visible high water mark. In these areas the digitized coastline was done along the sharp boundary between the rocks and the water. Rocks covered by water in the image were not included. Digitization included rocky protrusions into the water. Smoothing of the coastline was not done once the details were visible from 1:400 scale and larger. Sandy Coastlines: Areas with sandy coastlines were digitized using the high water mark which is typically visible as the demarcation saturated and unsaturated sand. It was important to digitize this water mark and not the wave front as the latter could be receding or advancing at the moment the image was taken and not represent the true coastline. Islands:All land mass larger than 9,000 m2 within the territorial waters of Trinidad and Tobago were digitized. Image errors: In a few locations there are obvious image mosaic errors where the two neighbouring image tiles do line up. It was decided to not digitize the error but rather to estimate where the coastline would be using the neighbouring tiles as a guide. Sargassum:Several beaches, esp. along the eastern region of Tobago, had significant build-up of Sargassum seaweed which concealed the high water mark. In those instances, the upper boundary of the Sargassum was used as the demarcation for the high water mark.
